Explore the port town of Stanley today, the Falkland Islands’ remote capital. The Falkland Islands were first colonised by the British in 1765, a history that is evident all throughout the town, from the red phone boxes through to the charming pubs. Perhaps take a historical tour or join one of the many wildlife activities available. You might like to see penguins at one of the world's largest rookeries, which is home to five of the world’s 18 species of penguins – the Gentoo, Magellanic, Southern Rockhopper, Macaroni and King penguin.

Before the Panama Canal, only the Strait of Magellan linked the Atlantic and Pacific oceans by boat. This important route was first traversed by Portuguese sailor Ferdinand Magellan in 1520 during a Spanish expedition to the East Indies. A cruise around the Tierra del Fuego archipelago, via the Cockburn and Beagle channels, brings you to Punta Arenas. Just a short flight away, perhaps discover the glaciers and peaks of World Heritage-listed Torres del Paine National Park.
