Your base will be Thessaloniki, Greece's second largest city and second only to Istanbul during the Byzantine Empire. Excursions to nearby towns allow a rare insight into Greek history including the Royal Tomb of King Phillip II, the capital of Alexander the Great (Pella) and Meteora with its Byzantine monasteries atop massive rock pillars.
