Finish:Helsinki, Finland
Travel Period
To drive through eastern Finland is to travel into the heart of the country's sense of itself. This is a landscape of deep forests, low ridges and lakes that catch and hold the light, and the Finns have long regarded it as the truest picture of home. During the era of national romanticism, painters such as Akseli Gallen-Kallela and Eero Järnefelt travelled the country at considerable effort and brought these scenes into the national imagination. Writers like Runeberg and Topelius returned to the same region in their work.
It is also the ground from which the Kalevala grew. The songs that Elias Lönnrot gathered here, sung and re-sung across generations, became Finland's national epic, and are often credited among the influences on Tolkien's Middle-earth. Alongside the myth, the route traces Finland's Russian ties and its war history, the two threads that shaped this border country.
Highlights
- Drive through the lake district that shaped Finland's idea of itself, the forests, ridges and still water that painters and poets returned to again and again.
- Wander Porvoo, the country's second oldest town, where red timber warehouses line the river and Runeberg's home is kept much as he left it.
- Spend a night in an Art Nouveau castle beside the Vuoksi rapids at Imatra, built a century ago for travellers arriving from Saint Petersburg.
- Cross Lake Saimaa on a dinner cruise in the long light of the White Nights, following part of the old canal that once linked Finland to Vyborg.
- Walk the Punkaharju Ridge with a private guide, where pines frame the water and Everyman's Right lets you roam wherever your feet take you.
- Stand at Ukko-Koli for the view over Lake Pielinen, the landscape most Finns picture first, and the one that drew Järnefelt and Sibelius.
- Taste Karelian cooking close to its source, from the rye-and-rice pies of Joensuu market to the wines made by the brotherhood at New Valamo.
- Look for the Saimaa ringed seal from a silent electric boat, one of the rarest seals in the world and found in this lake alone.
